Demmery and Sells take Production class spoils at Round 3 of ASBK

The Over 300 Production and Under 300 Production class played host to some of the most exciting racing of 2016 on the weekend, as Round 3 of the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli was held at Sydney Motorsport Park in New South Wales.

The two classes which house some of the most talented individuals on two wheels, went to battle across three races on the weekend, with Sunday dishing out plenty of action.

In race two for the Production class on Sunday, Thugs Customs’ Brandon Demmery who started from pole position was the early race leader, whilst YRD’s Callum Alderson, Jack Dawes (JDR Racing) and Jack Mahaffy slotted in closely behind.

Despite Demmery having a tight grip on the race lead aboard his Yamaha R3, with three laps remaining Demmery ran his machine wide and took Dawes with him, allowing Alderson to inherit the race lead followed by Hunter Ford who picked up two positions to slot in to second.

From there, Alderson was unstoppable – taking the race two Production class win, ahead of Ford in second, while Demmery was able to recover from his earlier mistake to wrap up race two in third. Race Centre’s Drew Sells managed to conclude the race in fourth position, ahead of Dawes and Sam Condon who finished in fifth and sixth places respectively.

In the final Production class race for the day, competitors were forced to contend with wet conditions for the first time at the ASBK in 2016, and it was Alderson who took to the conditions and emerged as the early race leader.

With only a few laps in the books there was a challenge for the race lead, with Yamaha mounted Ty Lynch applying the pressure on Alderson, however Alderson was able to fight off every attempt and kept Lynch at bay.

With a dry line forming, allowing competitors to gain more traction, the fight for second and third positions began to heat up with Demmery and Jack Mahaffy able to make their way by Lynch.

For Demmery however the fight didn’t stop there, and with two laps remaining the Yamaha mounted star caught up to the rear wheel of Alderson and then executed a pass to move in to the race lead.

Despite Mahaffy challenging Demmery for the lead on the last lap, Demmery was able to make his top position stick, crossing the line with the final race victory, followed by Mahaffy in second while Alderson who despite leading the race for a lengthy period of time, was forced to settle for third.

With solid results of two race wins and a third place, Demmery was awarded the Over 300cc Production round win at Sydney Motorsport Park, ahead of Alderson and Mahaffy who finished in second and third places respectively.

In the Up to 300cc Production class it was Drew Sells who took the overall round win with an impressive third place in race one, followed by a fourth and 10th in races two and three. Justin Hall and Sam Condon finished the round in second and third places respectively for the talent packed Up to 300cc Production class.

In the Women’s Production Class it was Keegan Pickering who went undefeated at SMP to claim the overall, followed by her fellow female competitors Laura Brown and Julie Klinker who finished in second and third places respectively.

Demmery, who was the most dominant Production bike on track across the entire weekend, shared his thoughts moments after leaving the podium.

“I am feeling pretty confident, obviously the Yamaha is working really well, we can’t thank all our sponsors enough for their hard work,” Demmery spoke proudly.

“I am feeling good on the bike even in wet conditions. We have started off the season well and this is a nice way to reward all of the people who back me.

“I have had a lot of experience riding in the wet in Asia but we are still getting used to the different tracks but we are happy with where we are at and we are making improvements,” Demmery concluded.
