Simpson sweeps Moto 3 / 125GP

South Australian youngster Olly Simpson (Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit) has put in a dominant display of racing in the third and final Moto 3 / 125GP race at the opening 2015 ASBK Championship round at Phillip Island.

Simpson added to his two race wins on Saturday with a clinical third race victoy on Sunday to clean sweep the round and take first overall, ahead of Victorian Matt Barton (ETS Race Fuels).

Barton finished the round second overall after finishing second in all three races, while Ted Collins (Magnum Welders) finished third overall after a consistent weekend of racing (fourth, sixth and third).

In race three, Simspon had already taken a 1.5 second lead heading into turn four on the opening lap.

By the second lap the lead had already extended out to nearly four seconds as Simpson continued to press forward and put space between himself and Barton.

Barton had opened a gap of his own to Lachlan Kavney (Bullet Racing) who was trying to keep a host of riders at bay, with less than one second separating himself from Tom Bramich (Ron Angel Classic Racing), Collins, Tayla Relph (Fibre Zone Composites) and Brian Houghton (Latters Conshift).

On lap four of the six-lap race, Bramich moved into third place, but it was anyone’s guess who would take out the minor placing for the third race of the round and indeed the overall podium.

There was no second guessing the different level of class with Simpson, and the future star rode away to a comprehensive race and round win.

Barton was also clearly a cut-above the rest of the field – comfortably taking second place once more and when the chequered flag was raised, it was Collins who claimed third, with Bramich and Kavney rounding out the top-five.
