Wanneroo Mayor hails ASBK visit

City of Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts has lauded the third round of the 2015 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli as a huge success.

The round was held at Barbagallo Raceway in Wanneroo, and Roberts said that the support given to and from the local community combined to make the event a winner for everyone involved.

Speaking at the track on Sunday, Roberts admitted that the event was a coup for her city.

“For events like this to be here it is wonderful for the local community because there is great economical development support,” she said.

“The City of Wanneroo is the fastest growing local authority in Western Australia so we really embrace and encourage events like this in our city.

“You have people coming into the area, people actually spending money in the local area, and it gives the people in the community something to do – to come out and have a look.

“It was 2006 I think when the event was last here so it’s great, and we need it more often and more regularly – we’d love to be able to put it on our annual event calendar.”

Roberts admitted that motorcycling plays an important role in the City of Wanneroo, with clubs in the area facilitating Road Racing (including Historic), Motocross, Enduro, Trials, Quads and Supermoto.

“It’s a great facility for our growing community – the median age in the City of Wanneroo is 32 which is young families.

“To actually get to understand, get a good feel and be educated from a bikes perspective about how to handle yourself on a bike, and get the good values of usage on a bike and also the awareness of what could go wrong – that’s absolutely invaluable from a safety perspective.

“So in terms of safety and education it is very very important to our community – it is wonderful to see so many local riders involved here, and such a great level of support from the community.”

The Mayor even took time to get on the back of a bike – being led on a five-lap pillion ride of the track by Australian World Endurance Champion, Steve Martin.

“Wow – the ride was just amazing – it truly was the best experience. I was very nervous right from the outset, and you get the boots and gear on and I felt like I was 22!

“When you flip the visor down you get a bit nervous and then you dig your feet in, tuck your bum in, and then you are off.

“As soon as you think, this is pretty good, the warm up is over and he cranks it up to 240km/h, and it was just brilliant.”
