Winners are Grinners!

It was a fantastic weekend of racing at Morgan Park in Queensland at the second round of the 2015 Yamaha Motor Finance ASBK Championship presented by Motul Pirelli.

We had the chance to speak to the winners from each of the Championship classes on the weekend and here is what they had to say:

#46 Mike Jones – Yamaha Motorcycle Insurance Superbike Class – (Cube Racing Team)

“I am very happy with how the weekend went – it was pretty much perfect from the beginning to the end – I was fastest I think in every single session, got the two race wins and the overall win so it’s pretty much as good as it gets.

“I was comfortable on the bike and the XXX Rated Race Suspension have got the handling on the bike and the geometry going very well so it’s easy for me to ride and I can do lap times pretty consistently so I’m pretty happy with how that is.

“This year it has been great to be part of the Australian Outdoor Living Cube Racing Team to give us the best that we can to do well in the Championship, and I am looking forward to the rest of the year.”

#51 Brayden Elliott – Yamaha Motorcycle Insurance Superbike Class – (Brayden Elliott Racing)

“It was a perfect weekend and the second race was fairly difficult but to get a great start and actually be leading the race – it’s actually the first time I have been in that situation before.

I was just trying to put in some consistent laps and just stay focused and relaxed. It was a little bit close at the end there where I made a mistake on the last lap and I just managed to get the win. It was a very close race but I managed to get the job done with that one so we’ve had a pretty good weekend.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge of Barbagello – I have never ridden there before or seen the track so it will definitely be a challenge, but I’d say a lot of riders are going to be in the same boat.

“I won’t get too far ahead of myself just yet – as we have all seen anything can happen in racing and with three rounds to go I’ll just take it round by round and see where we end up at the end of the year.”

#7 Callum Barker – Honda Moto 3 / 125GP Class – (K1 Racing)

“The jump start in the last race was not ideal but I was just a bot eager to get out, so I just put my head down and bum up and decided to just go for it. Unfortunately I got slowed up by a lapped rider on the last lap, but that’s the way it goes.

“I was just trying to push as hard as possible. I knew it was going to be close in terms of the push for podium positions and I had a bit of a look behind so I was pretty confident I had made the podium by the time I reached the finish line.

“The last race caught me out a bit unexpectedly because I think they held the lights for a bit longer than usual, but given what happened at Phillip Island in round one I am happy with the result.

“Barbagello is a track that not many of us have been at before so we are going to see some pretty good racing and I can’t wait.”

#94 Michelle Marais – Production Class – (SP Racing)

“I am ecstatic and still trying to realise exactly what’s happening because it’s all happening so fast!

“I’m doing this sport because I love it and because I think that girls are just as up there as the boys and I think I proved it – and I think that Illish (Ross) also proved it during the weekend.

“I am excited more about the fact that there are two girls on the podium than I am with me getting the first – so hopefully in Western Australia we can do exactly the same.

“I am so happy we are riding at Barbagello – it is my home track and the only track we have over there besides Collie and I am pretty excited to go and ride on my home ground after this.”

The next round of the Championship will be held at Barbagallo Raceway in Western Australia from 22-24 May.
