Superpole, Super Success!
15-06-2009
Superpole will make a welcome return to the ASBK program at Eastern Creek Raceway for round for of the Championship following a highly successful debut at round 3.
A product of the World Superbike Championship, Superpole gives the 15 fastest riders from regular qualifying one flying lap to set the fastest time. One by one the riders complete their lap and grid positions are then determined from this performance.
It’s a format which provides nail biting tension, lots of excitement and above all else, it’s a great spectacle for the fans.
Superpole also rewards the brave and punishes mistakes, as was clearly seen at the previous round with Kawasaki's Kevin Curtain taking pole position over the more highly favoured riders of Glenn Allerton and Josh Waters.
An immensely experienced campaigner, Curtain is no stranger to riding under pressure (finishing runner up in the 2005 and 2006 World Supersport Championships) and says he enjoyed the new challenge.
"It really puts the pressure on you. You've got to go fast enough to get a good lap time but you don't want to make a mistake and throw it all away either so its good fun" said Curtain.
Likewise, Motologic Racing's Glenn Allerton was also a big fan of Superpole even though it didn't translate to a front row start.
"I loved it. I love the new challenge. It's something different. Even though I didn't come out on top, I actually came in 5th, but for me the whole format is great!" said Allerton.
The next round of the Woodstock Bourbon Australian Superbike Championship is only weeks away and fans will be treated to all the drama of Superpole along with bar-to-bar racing action and heaps of off track entertainment. Until then, check out the action from Round 3 of the Championship on Channel 10's 24hour sports channel, OneHD, on these dates...
