bLU cRU Oceania Junior Cup Profile: Reece Oughted

This week’s bLU cRU Oceania Junior Cup (OJC) Profile we look at Victorian #12, Reece Oughted from Ferntree Gully, who competed in the ASBK 300 Supersport Championship class as well as the OJC series during the 2019 season.

Due to Reece’s commitment to the OJC series off and on the track, he was recently given his first international racing opportunity in the Asia Talent Cup trials at the Sepang Circuit which he described as an amazing experience.

Reece, who likes a bit of Dirt Track for fun, gives us his run down on how and why he fell in love with two-wheel racing.

Tell us about where your love for motorcycle racing began and why?

Well, it probably all started from my Dad [Dean], because from a very young age I would go to the track with my Mum and we would watch Dad race. It just fascinated me just how fast they went. I just wanted to go racing myself after watching Dad race on the road racing tracks. When I was on the little bikes, I always wanted more in terms of going fast. Now, I’m getting onto the 300’s and its proper fast, which I love. The faster I go, the more fun it is.

Tell us about the first time you hopped on a motorcycle.

I had a Yamaha PW50 way, way back. However, the first bike I remember getting on and riding was my Husqvarna 50, which I used to race at the dirt track. That was good fun because it reeved so loud and fast because it was an actual race bike, compared to the PW which I had. The Husqvarna was probably the first bike which I remember riding.

Thinking back, tell us about one of your favourite memories growing up when it comes to motorcycling?

There is a fair few to list. However, my favourite would have to be when I was racing at Mildura on the 65. It was just a different experience because it was my first ever Australian title round. It was a completely different atmosphere as there was so many people around and it made me feel like a proper professional rider. It was just so much fun.

What career do you hope to end up in? For example, WSBK or MotoGP racer?

Well, I am trying my hardest to end up as a professional rider one day. I’m luckily enough to have been selected for the Asian Talent Cup Selection try outs in late October. So, hopefully if I go well enough in that I might be able to go over to Europe and race in the Red Bull Rookies Cup. Then maybe, if I try hard enough get into the World Moto3 Championship. Then from there try and get into Moto2 and obviously MotoGP.

Tell us who your sporting idol is. How have they impacted you and your love for motorcycling?

It would probably have to be my Dad, as he has been a good rider. Not only that, he has always been by my side and taught me everything about racing, which I use a lot today while I’m racing. My favourite rider would have to be Marc Márquez, simply because just how insanely fast he is. However, my Dad has impacted me the most when it comes to my racing.

What have you learnt from the bLU cRU Oceania Junior Cup?

I’ve actually learnt a lot to be honest. Not just about racing. I’ve learnt a lot about how to deal with the media, which is very important now days obviously. I’ve also picked up how to deal with sponsors and how to talk to them which has helped me a lot as well I must say.

In regards to the racing side of things, I have learnt about riding at the front and not using the brakes and being braver when I ride. I believe it’s made me into more of a braver rider.

Tell us about your bike, helmet, leathers, gloves and boots. How are you adjusting to the new bike? How do you find the products that have been chosen specially for you?

All the products are simply great and I can’t thank everyone for the support of the series. To start with, the AGV Helmets, I love them to bits. Same goes with the TCX Boots, Ricondi leathers and gloves. Everything is just fantastic and I can’t fault anything at all. Not only is the gear great, but they look amazing.

The Oceania Junior Cup Yamaha YZF-R15 is better than your normal R15, which you buy off the showroom floor, as they are pretty fast thanks to the slight tweaks they have had done to them.
