ASBK bLU cRU Managers Review – Winton

The sixth round of the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK) proved to be an exciting one with the Yamaha Racing Team capturing the 600cc Supersport title as Cru Halliday raced to another round victory, while all three bLU cRU 300cc Racing Team riders fight over who their championship with one round to come.

In a deal that came together in the week leading up to the opening round of the ASBK way back in February, Cru Halliday is the 2018 Australian Supersport Champion as he dominated the series almost from the get-go. Halliday made the podium at the opening round but has since gone on a race winning tear, claiming the next five round victories and has won the championship with one round to spare.

It was a great return to form for Halliday and continues Yamaha’s strong presence in the 600cc category with previous winners in including Kevin Curtain and Daniel Falzon in recent years.

The Superbike division saw Wayne Maxwell show impressive speed all weekend but didn’t bring home the results to show it. Maxwell was at or near the top of the qualifying sheets and then charged to front in race one, only to go down while leading. He rebounded to win race two but the DNF meant the 2018 championship is now out of reach and his focus is on holding second in the championship.

Team mate Daniel Falzon was again consistent taking fourth for the round with two rock solid rides. He still maintains a top five position in the championship and his goal is to go out in the final round with all guns blazing and aiming to land on the podium for both the round and the championship.

The bLU cRU 300 Racing team of Hunter Ford, Tom Bramich and Zac Levy again provided some intense racing and all three are fighting it out for the Supersport 300 honours in the series. Bramich currently leads the series but still has to stay focused at the final round at Phillip Island to secure this years’ championship.

John Redding – YRT
“Winton was wild as always and wasn’t a dull moment in the YRT sheds all weekend. In the Superbike class, Wayne was riding exceptionally well and very happy with his bike, just a fall going into turn one in the first race ruined his weekend. His speed was good and he was finally able to get a reward for it by winning the final race and left on a positive note.

“Daniel had an issue in each race and was just below his best but in the past, he would have thrown it down the road, he is now mature enough to keep it on two wheels, get as many points as possible and keep himself in contention. So, it is good to see that development in him.

“The goal for both riders now is to get on the podium at the final round and hopefully do the same in the championship. Wayne is second and a good round there will see him maintain that, while a good round for Daniel could see him jump from fifth to third if the cards fall his way.

“But no doubt the highlight of the week for us was seeing Cru pick up the Supersport championship on his R6. It was our goal to reclaim this championship at the start of the year and remind everyone just how good the R6 is and Cru has done a sensational job in representing us in that division. Congratulations to Cru and his supporters on a great year and a well-deserved title,” Redding ends.

Ian Irving – bLU cRU 300 Racing
“It was the usual mayhem with the 300 riders as they contest the 300cc Supersport and R3 Cup over the weekend and kept everyone super busy. It was great racing again and the results always throw up some interesting things and Winton was no different.

“In the 300cc Supersport, Tom Bramich has a comfortable 37-point lead over team mate, Zac Levy as they head to the final round. In fact, it’s a bLU cRU top three at the moment with Hunter Ford in third so it will be a great reward if we can get all three riders on the championship podium.

“The R3 Cup sees Hunter Ford in the lead but with just a handful of points over Levy with Bramich not far behind. It will be all on the line for all of them at the final round as the points are tight.”

The final round of the ASBK takes place at Phillip Island on October 12-14.
