Horsell Consulting Sidecars Contest Two Action Packed Races at Wakefield Park

Round 2 of the Motul Pirelli Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) played host to the first round of the 2019 Horsell Consulting F1 and F2 Sidecar Championship at Wakefield Park, Goulburn, NSW (March 22-24). 

The day’s sidecar action saw qualifying and two races, with Corey and Danyon Turner (Buddhas Motorcycle Paint, F1 Honda CBR) taking 45 points to secure provisional lead in the F1 championship alongside Jeremy Joyce and passenger Corey Blackman (F1 Kawasaki RHR), and Patrick Clancy and Stephen Bonney (Pagid Brakes,F2 Suzuki LCR) going back-to-back in F2 to take the 51 points from the day. 

Qualifying

In qualifying Steven Bayliss and Aaron Wilson (F1 Suzuki LCR) held the early advantage, posting a 1:07.664. They were quickly eclipsed by Joyce and Blackman, who came through with a 1:06.534 to hold the fastest position for most of the session. However defending champions Howard Ford and Lee Menzies (California Custom Products, F1 Suzuki LCR) showed their class late in the session to take pole position with a time of 1:06.638 ahead of Joyce/Blackman and Bayliss/Wilson. They were joined on the second row of the grid by Patrick Clancy and Stephen Bonney (Pagid Brakes,F2 Suzuki LCR 1:07.796) topping the F2 field. 

Race 1

As the race got underway the combination of Turner/Turner was out in front ahead of Bayliss /Wilson and Joyce/Blackman. On lap two Joyce and Blackman found their way into second, before claiming the lead on lap four ahead of Turner/Turner in second and Ford/Menzies.

Bayliss/Wilson slid back to fourth on lap four but managed to sneak past defending champions Ford/Menzies to reclaim third spot, and the two outfits held station to finish that way at the chequered flag. Jeff Brown and Darren Sheldrick (APW Motorcycles, F1 Suzuki JBR) finished fifth, and Clancy/Bonney were first home of the F2s in sixth.

Race 2

Turner/Turner took the early advantage in Race 2, over a second ahead of Bayliss/Wilson and Joyce/Blackman who were battling for second spot through the early laps. Clancy and Bonney were once again the best of the F2 outfits, holding down fourth spot ahead of defending champions Ford/Menzies in fifth spot and eight seconds off the lead by lap four.

On the second last lap Damian Edis and Melanie Schuter had an off at turn two, with both rider and passenger up and OK. Joyce and Blackman were clearly on a charge, setting a new lap record of 1:05.336. At the chequered flag Turner/Turner took the honours, ahead of Joyce/Blackman and Bayliss/Wilson.  Clancy/Bonney took their second straight race win to lead home the F2 Class.
